Spring can really hang you up the most.
I’ve known this song vocally for many years but I just made a new ukulele arrangement for it so I could accompany myself on ukulele. I’m quite pleased with myself because this song has 41 different chords in it and many of them are not ones that I typically use. Also, it’s still Spring, and this song is about my favorite season!

Vacation

an upbeat little jazz tune that I wrote after meeting someone that was such a pleasure to be with that it felt like I was on vacation from everything. I don't know if anything will ever really come of it but it was such a nice feeling that it inspired the thought in my head "being with you is like a vacation" and then of course the next thought after that was, "what a great idea for a song" and...

    I noticed you put a hole in the middle of coconut fiber. Will the Water Lilies be able to grow up through the coconut fiber without the hole. I have a lily root where the lilies are growing from the end of the root about 4 inches in length not from the middle of the root. Thank you so much for the video. Very helpful

    • @JulieVaughn
      @JulieVaughn 13 днів тому

      The type of coconut fiber I’m using in this video which comes on a roll is very densely packed at first and I wouldn’t put it over the crown of the lily without making a hole for it. You can make the hole wherever you need to but you don’t want to cover the crown of the lily with anything. Eventually the coconut fiber does loosen up and new sprouts and roots can then come through it. When I’m potting up a new one I always try to position the crown upwards in the middle of the pot because then I don’t have to repot it for a longer amount of time. It’s ok to change the direction of the crown when repotting.

    • @JulieVaughn
      @JulieVaughn 13 днів тому

      Oh yeah, and you don’t necessarily need the sink protectors as long as you put rocks on top of the coconut fiber. The bigger your fish, the bigger the rocks should be. I’ve lately not been using the sink protectors and no trouble so far. The coconut fiber just helps to keep the lily soil out of the pond.

      @@JulieVaughn so you don't have to lay the root 4 inches long horizontally in the bucket you can stand the root up vertically?

    • @JulieVaughn
      @JulieVaughn 12 днів тому

      @@pamelaselbe3784 as long as the main roots are covered with soil you don’t. I always try to have them as vertical as possible because then I usually don’t have to repot as often. That’s also why I plant in a dishpan.

    Thanks for the video! What about the concern with the chemicals from the whole noodle for the plants and the fish etc.? Some people say they’re not good for that just wondering thank you so much.

    • @JulieVaughn
      @JulieVaughn 17 днів тому

      Yikes! I actually never thought about that until you asked this question. I do inspect them regularly to make sure that they’re not breaking down and make new ones if necessary however, apparently according to Google what they are made out of does include things that aren’t so good. That being said I haven’t had any issues. All my fish are healthy. The only thing that I can think of off the top of my head that might work good as an alternative would be expanding waterfall foam, which is designed for ponds and is guaranteed to be nontoxic and fish safe. You would have to put it around the edge maybe of a pot, or squirt into pvc pipe maybe? I don’t know but now you’ve given me a new thing to ponder. I do have several cans of expanding waterfall foam so maybe I’ll put my thinking cap on and come up with another idea. Thanks for your question.

      Exactly. And not that I owe you any explanation into the division of labor in our household but I’m 67 years old and I have some physical limitations that preclude me from being able to do that type of work where I would have to be behind our pond. I do most of the daily maintenance on our pond and I do ALL of plant maintenance in and outside of the pond unless it requires a ladder. Then my husband does it because he doesn’t want me to hurt myself or be in pain. It’s called cooperation.

    How did you install the panels to your fence?

    • @JulieVaughn
      @JulieVaughn 2 місяці тому

      My husband built a frame that he attached to the fence and then attached the panels to the frame. He first made pilot holes in the panels so they wouldn’t crack. You can also attach the panels directly to any existing fence right over the fence all the way up without making the fence taller in many cases. Cats can’t climb it. In our case our neighbors didn’t mind us making the fence taller but in a lot of places there are rules about how tall your fence can be. It’s not so much about height, it’s more about material that cat claws can’t get into. I hope this helps.

      Sorry I just noticed this comment. I’m not sure if you’re referring to the netting or the paneling. The netting is either bird netting or deer netting, I’m pretty sure most of it is just regular bird netting that you use to keep birds out of fruit trees. They also make elastic netting which works well too but it’s more expensive and wears out faster. The bird netting wears out too but it’s good for at least 3 years and all you have to do to check it is pull on it a little and you can tell if it’s gone brittle from UV exposure. The panel’s are plastic corrugated panels and they come in clear like we have and also lots of other colors that give more privacy. Cats cannot climb them at all. Both items can be purchased at home improvement stores, like Home Depot.

      @JulieVaughn 3 місяці тому

      Thank you for your comment. There are different densities of styrofoam and these aren’t the regular styrofoam that breaks easily. They’re much denser and meant for flower arrangements and so far have stood up well. If I do see any sign of them breaking down I’ll remove them for sure.

      Cool. I love this. Thanks for commenting. 😎 I’m 66 and the Beatles have been my favorite band of all time since I first heard I wanna hold your hand on the radio when I was 6 years old! I have vivid memories of listening to it over and over again on a 45, on a portable record player in my across the street, neighbors backyard. 🥰 When I went to my 40 year high school reunion one of my classmates who I’d gone to school with since elementary school told me that he always thought I was really cool because in the 5th grade I had brought the latest Beatles album for show and tell, and another classmate told me that she thought I was super cool when she heard me sing Eleanor Rigby with my guitar in the quad at lunchtime in the 8th grade. That reunion made me realize that being a Beatles fan has made me super cool! 🤣🤣🤣

    I have a water lily plant in my pond and my fish have been eating the Lily pads. What can I do that doesn't involve me taking out the fish and frying them up for dinner?

    • @JulieVaughn
      @JulieVaughn 7 місяців тому

      Bon appétit 😋 once they get a taste for it, you might not be able to stop them. You could try a different type of Lily. I found that my Koi will munch tropical lilies in a heartbeat, but hardy lilies don’t seem to be as desirable I’ve quit trying to grow tropicals, and all I have are hardy’s. You could try feeding them some butter, lettuce, or Romain lettuce or some other type of greens. If they get them enough, they might leave your lilies alone. When I start new water lilies, I do start them in a fishless container, once it’s established itself then I’ll put it in the pond.

      If you have fish they will make a mess. Lilies need dirt to do well. I’ve seen some pond builds that included valleys for lilies to be planted in but you still need to put rocks or something around the crown of the lilies to keep fish from tearing up the roots.

    • @JulieVaughn
      @JulieVaughn 9 місяців тому

      Plants do consume Nitrates but unless you put them in a bog filter I don’t think that they really filter anything. A lot of people that keep koi won’t have plants in with them because the plants require maintenance and create their own mess.
